Mercedes SLS Black Series spied

These pictures are proof that Mercedes is on a hardcore 208 hours miles Black Series version of his work SLS AMG supercar. The powered-up and stripped down Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series, spied here in testing for the first time at the Nurburgring is to go on sale in 2013, costs about 50 percent more than the 'standard' £ 168,395 gullwinged coupe.

Autocar understands the decision, a Black Series version of the SLS make as far back as 2006, when the development of the standard AMG super sports car was first started. The Black Series' dramatic body, including a large fixed rear wing, front splitter, rear diffuser and additional cooling on the hood and a wider track for the first time a preview of the SLS GT3 race car at the 2010 New York Auto Show.

AMG engine boss Friedrich Eichler said in 2009 that "there will be much more" even from the SLS 6.2-liter V8 engine that produces 563bhp and 479 pounds-feet in the standard car.

Mercedes insider revealed that outputs ft probably around 600 hp and 500 pounds in the Black Series are. A larger air manifold, higher compression and reprofiled camshafts are among the expected improvements. A mechanical limited-slip differential is also tipped to be beefed Black Series as part of upgrades and the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox up to handle the additional torque to be absorbed.

These performance upgrades, as well as a 50kg reduction in curb weight and improved aerodynamics package, is expected to lead to a 0-62mph time of 3.5sec and a top speed of 208 mph. The standard SLS can crack 0-62mph in 3.8sec and reach a top speed of 197 mph.

2013 Mercedes S-Class Caught at Nürburgring [New Spy Shots]

In addition to the spy shots of upcoming Mercedes S-Class that we see today, now we have a new set of images rotated during testing at the Nurburgring and we want to share with our readers.

Unfortunately, these pictures are pretty useless because the car is covered in thick camouflage which hide many important details. However, one thing is clear: a new Mercedes S-Class is on the road and that's not all because some reports say it will be loaded with gadgets and hi-tech equipment.

According to the same reports, the 2013 S-Class are fitted with 6D-Vision, a system designed for pedestrians and cyclists appear from behind parked cars on site. Given that the average person will take 500 milliseconds to process this information and emergency stop switch, we can say that the 6D-Vision technololy (can do in 200ms) is a really useful thing.

The manufacturer decided to improve the comfort and to do this, they will the new car with Magic Body Control (MBC), which is a system designed to make your life easier, guaranteed. If you do not already know, this set-up scans the road and adjusts the suspension is to sit and enjoy helping poor roads. Besides these, there is a system that can prevent body roll for better handling.

The official details are not available at this time, but we should expect a futuristic interior, complete with large TFT screens and digital dials. The 2013 model will also come with radar-guided cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot warning, automatic braking systems and night vision cameras.

In terms of power, the upcoming Mercedes S-Class, the V6, V8 and even V12 engines, more than efficiency and filled with gadgets such as cylinder shut-off function, stop / start and mild-hybrid systems to pass strict rules EU6. Expect the most basic models for around 300bhp and hot AMG models to produce more than 650bhp.

The new Mercedes S-Class is expected to arrive midway through 2012, and closely followed by a two-door coupe and even a convertible version.

Detroit Auto Show : Mercedes-Benz C-class

Detroit Auto Show: Mercedes-Benz C-classMercedes reveals prices and specifications for its updated C-class saloon and estate at the Detroit Auto Show.

A facelifted C-class, whoopty doo! That’ll be more technology, and a bigger, better, stronger and longer car that occupies the market segment largely filled by the previous model. Hey, don’t knock it. That’s 8.5million cars since 1982 even though the C-class proper wasn’t fully on stream until 1993.

The new model goes on sale on March 26, with more than 2,000 changes over the old model although you’d scarcely know it from the mildly facelifted coachwork. Step inside and you will know it, however, with a much needed improvement to the interior quality and design.

The engines are upgraded too, with more power and better economy. Most efficient is the £27,870 170bhp 220 CDi BlueEfficiency model with a manual gearbox which has a 64.2mpg Combined thirst emitting just 117g/km of carbon dioxide – this will be the fleet darling.

With an average 1.6 per cent increase (1.4 per cent for the estate models), launch prices start at £25,515 for the 156bhp C180 manual model, rising to £33,265 for the 204bhp C250 CDI turbodiesel, with the estate typically costing about £1,215 more than the saloon models.

All automatic models are now fitted with the Mercedes seven-speed torque converter autobox, which improves efficiency, although unlike with twin-clutch transmissions fitted to VW rivals, the manual C-class models are still the most economical choice in all cases.

The worst part of the old model was its 00 gauge sandpaper dashboard and door tops, and thankfully this is changed along with the overall design to fit in with the new corporate look. There’s a new telemetric screen for in-car entertainment and satnav functions, and ten new safety features have migrated down the Mercedes-Benz model range to the C-class. These include Attention Assist, which monitors driver behaviour for fatigue, Active lane keeping assistance, blind-spot assistance, speed-limit assistance and intelligent headlamp assistance.

There are three UK model specifications: SE with 16in wheels and tyres, Elegance, which costs £1,295 more and adds 17in wheels and more features, and Sport, which is a further £1,700 more than the Elegance and adds 18in AMG wheels and yet more features.

Style watchers should take note that the Elegance and SE versions get the traditional Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star bonnet mascot, while the Sport model has the star incorporated into the grille.

Mercedes-Benz CLS vs. Audi A7 Sportback

Mercedes-Benz CLS vs. Audi A7 Sportback
Why the comparison?
Because the timing couldn't be better. Mercedes-Benz has just introduced its second-generation CLS, while Audi has revealed its first attempt at a contender for the genre-busting Merc with its A7. They're both making bold claims about being sector-defining vehicles, while both like to think they're the greenest, most stylish and best to drive, too.
How are they similar?
Both chuck out convention and add a twist to an established genre of vehicles. Both claim to be 'four-door coupés', which in itself is a contradiction in terms. Think more rakish saloons than proper coupés. The CLS is the car that started the trend, while the A7 is Audi's attempt at getting a slice of the market for itself. Both claim to be sporting to drive while mixing grand touring credentials, though by both manufacturers' admissions they will be predominantly sold with diesel engines.
Both feature 3.0-litre, six-cylinder engines, the CLS confusingly badged 350 CDI, the Audi more conventional with its 3.0 TDI badge on the boot. The Mercedes-Benz gets 261bhp and 457lb.ft of torque, while the Audi gets 245bhp and 368lb.ft of torque. The Mercedes-Benz covers the 0-62mph sprint in 6.2 seconds, with the Audi taking just 0.1 seconds more.
On the environmental stakes there's not much in it either, with the CLS returning 47mpg and the Audi 47.1mpg, while the Audi's CO2 emissions figure is 158g/km and the Mercedes CLS 159g/km. Both achieve these impressive environmental figures in part by using stop-start systems, which cut off the engine while sitting idle.
The rakish lines in each do mean there are some compromises, mostly with regards to the passenger space. Head- and legroom in each isn't as generous as it is in their conventional saloon relatives.
Both ride well though, and despite their comfort there's some sporting appeal to the way they drive. The CLS feels slightly more involving, with its steering more alert and feelsome, but there's really not much in it on the road. In terms of safety equipment and driver assist systems both the Audi and Mercedes come will all the equipment you'd expect at this level.
Mercedes-Benz CLS vs. Audi A7 Sportback
How do they differ?
The numbers for the A7 and CLS are so close there's little in the way of tangible data to separate them. Changes then are relatively subjective, with the differences more down to your preferences and taste. Both largely borrow their interiors from other models in their range, but it's the Audi that arguably feels more special. There's nothing wrong with the interior of the CLS, it's just that Audi's interiors are a tough act to beat for usability and fit and finish.
The key difference is that the A7 is a hatchback compared to the saloon boot of the CLS. The A7 is also a quattro four-wheel drive model compared to the rear-wheel drive CLS. That brings more surefooted traction should you need it, but the CLS feels the more agile and interesting to drive regardless.
Both sell thanks to their looks, the CLS being a bit more extrovert in its style than the Audi. The A7 is arguably more elegant and less brash as a result, though some might find its looks a bit too restrained.
Mercedes-Benz CLS vs. Audi A7 Sportback
So which one would we have?
That's a tough call. Audi claims the A7 has some Avant (estate) practicality thanks to its large hatchback boot and certainly access is better than the CLS. Buyers are less likely to worry about boot space and its access though and concentrate more on style and driver appeal. On those counts the Mercedes-Benz beats its Audi rival. With the numbers being so close it's all down to pricing, which, as Mercedes-Benz hasn't released CLS prices for the UK as yet, makes a genuine conclusion difficult to make. If the money's right the CLS is the car we'd pick, but the Audi is incredibly close on all fronts.

2011 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 4MATIC Review

The Mercedes-Benz GLK350 4MATIC arrived in the midsize luxury SUV market with such charisma and style that it completely caught the competition off guard. Value priced starting at $35,500 for 2011; it seems incredible Mercedes-Benz can make something so refined and sell it for such a sensible price.

The GLK350 4MATIC offers a fresh take on what defines a luxury SUV. It looks striking as we take it for a highway spin to see how much everyday driving excitement an SUV can muster. Our destination is wine country in Niagara-on-the-lake, Ontario, Canada.

POWER AND DRIVABILITY

Power comes in the form of a 3.5-liter 24-valve V6 engine. Quiet and smooth, it produces a total of 268 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 258 ft-lbs of torque from 2400 rpm.
Mated to the 7G-TRONIC 7-speed automatic transmission, 0-60 mph flashes past in a rather quick 6.5 seconds with top speed limited at 130 mph.
Fuel economy is a chink in the GLK’s armor, however, with a rating of just 16-mpg city and 21-mpg highway.
4MATIC Permanent All-Wheel Drive is standard on the GLK350. So too is ESP (Electronic Stability Program), ABS and ASR (Acceleration Skid Control). New for 2011 is the option to de-select AWD and choose a rear-wheel drive only model, which will save you $2,000.
Handling over the twisties and city streets is first-rate, due in part to the standard Agility Control suspension. Designed to adjust suspension settings automatically to match road and driving conditions, it works flawlessly behind the scenes making necessary changes in milliseconds. Agility Control steering works in harmony to provide maximum driving pleasure and confidence.
I experience this first-hand as we take the opportunity to explore several of Niagara’s more challenging back roads and wine routes. And while SUVs are traditionally intended to deliver excellent off-road capability, the Mercedes-Benz GLK350 also offers enough swagger when the muddy roads become pavement and bravura takes precedent over brawn.

DESIGNED WITH STATUS IN MIND

A stout prow and steep rear quarter blend seamlessly with strong character lines flowing front to back. Angled wheel arches add appeal while at the same time making it easy to see where you are on the road. Standard equipment includes 20-inch twin 5-spoke alloy wheels and aluminum roof rails.
The 2011 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 sits high off the road. A two-bar chrome grille highlights the three-pointed star logo, announcing your presence long before you arrive. Tall windows provide excellent outward visibility. Large side mirrors are tapered to improve airflow and show clearly what’s behind. Satin metal finish roof rails round out a remarkably well-executed exterior design.

Inside, passenger car dimensions provide a relaxed interior for 4 or 5 with plenty of rear cargo space. In total, there's 23.3 cu.-ft. behind the rear seats, which expands to 54.7 cu.-ft. with the second row folded flat. Seats are positioned high in the cabin for increased visibility and safety. Superbly comfortable, they offer 8-way power adjustment and 3-position memory for both front seat occupants.
Multiple cupholders, dual-zone climate control and our optional panoramic sliding glass sunroof add to the experience. Power window controls provide the added convenience of one-touch up/down. Spilt-fold rear seating with cargo cover is standard.

A 3-spoke sport steering wheel features tilt and telescope adjustment. Built in controls include stereo adjustment, telephone and a wide range of information options including fuel economy, tire pressure and more.
Large round white on black gauges dominate the driver’s dash layout. In a nod to the past, a key fob engages the engine (no push button?). The center dash features dual-zone climate control, AM/FM/CD/MP3 player and navigation where equipped. Our vehicle highlights piano black trim and soft gray leather.

THE VERDICT

The small to midsize SUV and crossover market is crammed full with excellent vehicles all vying for a piece of the action. The evolutionary design and execution of the Mercedes-Benz GLK350 4MATIC is sure to position it as one of the main contenders. Though it won’t start a revolution, it certainly crosses the line between expensive taste and working with a budget.
