DETROIT -- Porsche AG's 918 RSR concept -- introduced this week at the Detroit auto show -- was named best in show today by editors at AutoWeek.
“It was the undisputed star of the show,” said Wes Raynal, AutoWeek editor. “Porsche is clearly looking at going back to Le Mans in 2012, and the Porsche 918 RSR gives us clues to a production coupe coming in 2013.”
This was the German automaker's first appearance at the Detroit auto show since 2007. The 918 supercar beat out the 2012 Audi A6, the 2011 Chrysler 300, the Ford Vertrek concept and the Mini Paceman.
The Vertrek received the best concept award because of its blend of European styling and American practicality.
“Ford has been so focused on serious stuff such as small cars and fine-tuning production models that it hasn't had a lot of time to craft concepts capable of turning heads at auto shows,” said Roger Hart, AutoWeek executive editor.
“The best part is that Ford design boss J Mays says this concept is very close to the look of the next Escape.”
AutoWeek also named the redesigned Chrysler 300 as the most significant model and the all-new BMW 1-series M coupe as the most fun vehicle of the Detroit show.
The 300 earned the honor because of its critical position within the Chrysler lineup, and the 1-series M coupe “gets the driver in us excited,” Hart said.
The awards were announced at the 17th AutoWeek Design Forum, held at the College for Creative Studies. AutoWeek, a sister publication of Automotive News, also honors vehicles within these four categories at the auto shows in Geneva, Paris, Frankfurt and Tokyo.
